Emily James Smith was appointed the first Dean of Barnard College in 1894. She served in that role until 1900. She was a Trustee from 1901-1905. She taught history at Barnard from 1914-1929. Her marriage to George Haven Putnam in 1899 established her as a role model for women who combined careers and marriage. Under Mrs. Putnam's administration the agreement between Columbia and Barnard was renegotiated, giving Barnard a seat on the University Council and naming the President of Columbia to Barn...
